Autumn Self-Care Tips

With the onset of chillier weather and the first week of October being Mental Health Awareness Week, we felt it was crucial to touch on the importance of physical and mental health during this new season.

The arrival of fall weather is oftentimes accompanied by a dip in energy and lethargic mood otherwise known as the “blues”, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). While not everyone suffers from full-blown SAD, many of us do feel some sort of shift in our energy and need to adjust our lifestyles.

With that in mind, we put together our top DOs & DON’Ts for staying on top of your wellness game before the seasonal blues hit.

1. DON'T mess with your circadian cycles. Keeping your sleep and wake times constant are essential to keeping your mood and energy levels high despite the dip in temperatures and the reduction of natural daylight.

2. DO supplement accordingly. While most of us are aware that vitamin deficiencies can impact us physically, many of us forget about the impact they have on our mental and emotional states. It is crucial for you to opt for supplements that boost your energy and restock the nutrients that your body doesn't produce as regularly in fall and wintertime.

There are plenty of nutritious supplements that can help us overcome the imbalances in our diet and consequently improve our moods, decrease anxiety, and improve sleep.

3. DON'T skip movement. Exercise produces the natural endorphins you need to elevate your mood, energy, and overall physical health. It boosts your immune system, releases stress, and increases the presence of serotonin in your brain—improving and regulating your mood, sleep, and appetite. Just 20-30 minutes three times a week is enough to feel the difference.

4. DO take some (extra) time for yourself. Now more than ever, self-care is your lifeline. You may be feeling a little bit more run down than usual, so carve out a little extra time to relax and engage in whatever it is that makes you feel GOOD.

5. DO make sure to support your hormones. Hormones have profound effects on our mental, physical, and emotional health. When you’re highly stressed, moody, or tired, it is oftentimes a sign that they are unbalanced. Hormones that are out of whack cause weight fluctuations, breakouts, mood swings, and even changes in body odor!

Your best bet is to focus especially on eating a well-balanced diet, drinking enough water, sleeping enough, and using natural products.

6. DON'T hesitate to consult with a professional. No one is better equipped to assist you in beating the seasonal blues or simply getting yourself on track towards being the best version of yourself.

On that note, make sure to take of yourself first—it’s the most productive thing you can do.
